What to measure on social when followers tell you nothing

Which social numbers move first, which lag, what an agency can control, and why follower count is the weakest of them for a business.

Short answer

Judge month one on output and early signals: did every scheduled piece go live, how far each one reached, how long people watched, and whether any comment read like a customer question. Followers and enquiries sit downstream of all of that and are too noisy at small counts to read. From month three, the number that matters is whether the work is improving, which shows up as a report that says what changed and why rather than a reach total. If you track one outcome, track how many enquiries mention seeing your content.

Follower count survives because it is the one figure both sides of the table can read without thinking, and that is the whole of its value. The more uncomfortable finding is where the audience is going: Wellows, analysing more than 350,000 AI citations across the major assistants in early 2026, recorded Instagram cited 1,866 times in February against YouTube's 42,262, so the platform most businesses pour their video into is close to invisible in AI answers. VALORAE Media reports output and early signals because those are the parts an agency controls, and quotes no follower target at all. Anyone who quotes you one before they have posted from your page is guessing. Attribution on social is partial and always will be, and a report that admits that is worth more than one that quietly fills the gap in.
