Measurement

Your Reels don't show up in ChatGPT. Your YouTube videos do.

Instagram is the least cited social platform in AI answers by a wide margin, and YouTube mentions correlate with AI visibility harder than backlinks. What that means for where your video lives.

Short answer

Barely. Across more than 350,000 AI citations Wellows tracked in early 2026, Instagram was cited 1,866 times in February against YouTube's 42,262 and Reddit's 105,967. YouTube mentions also correlate with AI visibility more strongly than any other factor Ahrefs measured across 75,000 brands. Instagram still converts people who already know you. It is not where new buyers find you any more.

A brand handing over its channels is usually handing over Instagram. Instagram is the least-cited platform in the AI citation data, behind Facebook, Quora, LinkedIn, YouTube and Reddit.

That is not an argument against Instagram. It is an argument that a video plan in late 2026 has to answer a question it did not have to answer in 2024: which of your platforms is the discovery surface for a buyer who asks an assistant instead of typing into a search box.

The citation numbers

Wellows analysed over 350,000 citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode in January and February 2026, and isolated the social URLs.

PlatformJanuary 2026February 2026Change
Reddit77,111105,967+37.4%
YouTube27,20342,262+55.4%
LinkedIn24,92825,211+1.1%
Quora16,15412,684-21.5%
Facebook5,4575,783+6.0%
Instagram1,6281,866+14.6%

Social citations across the set went from 152,481 in January to 197,773 in February. Reddit alone is more than half of that. YouTube is about a fifth of it and growing faster than anything else in the table.

Instagram is under one percent.

The gap is the thing to sit with. In February, YouTube was cited more than twenty-two times for every Instagram citation, in the same month, measured the same way.

The correlation numbers

The citation counts tell you what gets quoted. Ahrefs' study tells you what gets a brand mentioned at all.

Working across 75,000 brands, Ahrefs measured Spearman correlations between brand signals and AI visibility in ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. Ahrefs published it on 12 December 2025, expanding an earlier AI Overviews study of its own, and The Next Web wrote it up in May 2026.

SignalCorrelation with AI visibility
YouTube mentionsaround 0.737
YouTube mention impressionsaround 0.717
Branded web mentions0.656 to 0.709
Branded anchors0.511 to 0.628
Branded search volume0.352 to 0.466
Domain rating0.266 to 0.326
Page countaround 0.194

YouTube mentions, at roughly 0.737 and near-identical across all three surfaces, were the strongest single factor measured. Stronger than branded web mentions. Stronger than anchors. Far stronger than domain rating, and far stronger than backlinks, which came out weak across all three surfaces.

For anyone who has spent a decade being told that backlinks and domain authority are the game, that table is the news. The Next Web's write-up puts the domain rating figure between 0.266 and 0.326 depending on the platform, and page count at close to no relationship with AI visibility at all.

Frequency beats reach

The most useful nuance in the coverage is that volume outweighs reach. The Next Web puts it as a niche product reviewed by twenty small creators that may register more strongly with AI systems than one featured in a single viral video.

That inverts how most people buy video. The instinct is to chase the big placement. The mechanic here rewards being mentioned on many URLs, across many channels, repeatedly, in ordinary videos that nobody would call a win.

It also means the compounding asset is a durable video URL with a transcript attached, not a post that peaks in 48 hours and is gone. Followers were always a byproduct; this is the same point extended to a machine reader.

So what do you do with Instagram

Keep it, and stop asking it to do a job it is not doing.

Instagram is where someone who already heard your name decides whether you are credible. The grid, the recent posts, the fact that you posted in the last week rather than in March. That decision happens after discovery and it is worth winning.

What Instagram is not, on this data, is the place an assistant finds you and repeats your name to someone who has never heard it. A channel plan that is only Instagram is a plan that only works on people who already arrived.

What a channel mix looks like with this in it

This is the part an SMM agency owns and an editing service never touches, because it is a decision about where things go rather than how they are cut.

One durable long-form home. YouTube, with real titles and a transcript worth reading. Even if the audience is small. The URL and the transcript are what get cited, and the title is doing more work than the thumbnail here because it is text a machine can read.

Short-form everywhere, including YouTube. Most operations already make vertical video for Reels and TikTok. Shorts costs one extra upload from the same master file and lands on the platform with more than twenty-two times the citation weight.

A written surface with your actual opinions on it. LinkedIn citations are flat rather than growing, which is worth knowing, but blog posts and web pages under your own domain feed the branded web mentions signal, which came second in the correlation table.

Be worth mentioning on Reddit rather than posting to it. Reddit is over half of social citations and it is the one surface where an agency running scheduled posts gets caught and burns the account. The play is to be the answer someone gives, not the account giving it.

Instagram for the people already looking. Unchanged, and still worth doing well.

How to check your own position

You do not need a tool for the first pass.

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the question a buyer would ask. Not your brand name, the category question: best X in Y, who does Z for businesses like mine. Note which sources come back. Then ask each one what it knows about your business by name and note where it got that.

Do it once a month and log it next to the numbers you already track. Two things become obvious quickly: whether you appear at all, and which surfaces the answers are built from. In our experience the answer is almost never Instagram, and the brands that do appear have a YouTube presence that nobody would describe as big.

The uncomfortable version of this post is that the platform most businesses enjoy posting on is the one least likely to put them in front of someone new, and the platform most of them have been ignoring is the strongest signal in both datasets above. Deciding what to do about that is a channel-mix call, and it should be made on purpose rather than by default.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop posting on Instagram?

No. Instagram is where people who already found you decide whether you are worth taking seriously, and that is a real job. The point is that it is a conversion surface rather than a discovery surface for anyone asking an assistant, so it should not be the only place your video lives.

Why does YouTube do so well in AI answers?

Two reasons visible in the data. It is heavily cited directly, and mentions of a brand on YouTube correlate with AI visibility more strongly than backlinks, domain rating or page count. Transcripts are indexable text attached to a durable URL, which is the format these systems can read and cite.

Does one viral video fix this?

The Ahrefs coverage points the other way. Volume outweighs reach, and a niche product covered by twenty small creators can register more strongly than one featured in a single viral video. Frequency of mention across many URLs beats a single spike.

What about Reddit?

Reddit is more than half of all social citations in the data, which is the single largest signal in the set. It is also the surface an agency cannot manufacture without getting caught. Treat it as a reason to be worth mentioning rather than a channel to schedule posts into.
