Meta Business Suite vs a paid scheduler: the listed prices
Meta Business Suite schedules Facebook and Instagram for free. Buffer and Later charge a listed monthly fee for more networks and an approval queue. The listed prices, fetched and dated, and what each tier adds.
Short answer
Meta Business Suite schedules Instagram and Facebook for free, with drafts and a calendar but no approval step. Buffer and Later charge a listed monthly fee, and on both the approval queue only appears on the second paid tier: Buffer Team at $10 a month per channel billed yearly and Later Growth at $37.50 a month billed yearly, per their pricing pages on 25 September 2026. Pay for a scheduler when a second person drafts, and buy the tier with the queue.
Three pricing pages, one afternoon, 25 September 2026. Meta Business Suite lists no price because it has none. Buffer's pricing page lists $5 a month per channel and Later's pricing page lists $18.75 a month on the entry tier, both billed yearly, both fetched 25 September 2026.
I went in expecting a close call. It was not one.
The first snag came from Meta itself. Their help centre returned a 400 to curl. The fetcher I tried next handed me article titles in a script I cannot read, and nothing under them.
So for twenty minutes I had a post about the free scheduler with zero quotes from its own documentation.
I nearly wrote the Meta section from memory, which is the exact thing this blog exists to stop doing. The fix is in Tab 1.
Tab 1: What the free scheduler does and does not do, from Meta's help
I opened the help pages in a real browser with the locale forced to English, and the body text appeared.
Meta's "How Meta Business Suite works" page, fetched 25 September 2026, calls it "this free platform" in its second paragraph.
That is the whole pricing section for Meta.
The same page, fetched the same day, says you can "schedule, publish and manage posts, stories, reels and more" and see it all in a calendar view.
Meta's "Create and manage posts in Meta Business Suite on desktop" page, fetched 25 September 2026, walks through Publish, Schedule or Finish later, and lists a Drafts tab beside Published and Scheduled.
But read what is missing.
That desktop page names two ways to be allowed to post, full control of the Page or content permission for it, and neither one is a review gate.
The word approval does not appear on it.
And the "Add collaborator" option on a published post is a co-author tag, which is a different thing from a reviewer.
So the free scheduler is a scheduler. Anyone with content permission can push a post live, and the owner finds out when it is live.
Tab 2: Buffer's listed tiers
Buffer's pricing page, fetched 25 September 2026, prices per channel, defaults to the yearly toggle, and lists a Free plan with up to 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel.
Essentials on Buffer's pricing page, same fetch date, is $5 a month per channel, shown as $60 billed yearly.
Team on Buffer's pricing page, same fetch date, is $10 a month per channel, shown as $120 billed yearly.
Buffer's own FAQ on that page, fetched 25 September 2026, says yearly billing takes 20% off, and the monthly figures sit behind a toggle my fetch did not flip. So I am quoting the yearly numbers only, because those are the ones I read.
Then the feature that matters.
Buffer's comparison table on the same page, same day, marks "Approval workflows" as not included on Free, not included on Essentials, and included on Team. Its wording for the feature is "manage who can draft and approve posts across your team."
I did not know if it would work out this cleanly before I read the table.
It did.
On Buffer, the approval queue lives on the top tier and nowhere else.
Tab 3: Later's listed tiers
Later's pricing page, fetched 25 September 2026, also defaults to yearly billing and prints "3 months free | 25% off" beside every tier.
Starter on Later's pricing page, fetched 25 September 2026, is $18.75 a month for 1 social set of up to 8 profiles and 1 user; Growth is $37.50 a month for 2 social sets and 2 users; Scale is $82.50 a month.
The comparison table on the same page, same fetch date, lists "Content Approval Workflow" as No on Starter, Yes on Growth, Yes on Scale.
Later sells by the social set, one profile per network. Buffer sells by the channel.
So two channels on Buffer Team is $20 a month billed yearly from Buffer's pricing page on 25 September 2026, and two social sets on Later Growth is $37.50 a month billed yearly from Later's pricing page the same day. Two different units.
But the pattern is identical. On both paid schedulers, the cheapest tier does not gate posts, and the tier that does gate them is the next one up.
Tab 4: The approval queue is the feature the fee buys
The free tool is enough.
I mean that for one owner, one Facebook Page, one Instagram account and no editor in the loop. Meta's help pages, fetched 25 September 2026, describe scheduling, drafts, a calendar view, reels, stories and cross-posting to Threads, and none of it costs anything.
If you write and post your own content, paying for a scheduler is paying for networks you do not use.
The moment a second person drafts, the calculus flips. An editor with content permission on Meta can publish, and the only control you have is trust. That holds until the week a caption goes out with the old price in it.
We run client channels at VALORAE Media, and the approval step is the part of the job we refuse to remove.
I wrote up how the client side of that queue should work in the approvals post. The honest summary is that the process only holds if the tool has a state called waiting for approval that a post cannot skip.
Meta does not have that state. Buffer Team and Later Growth do.
That is the feature. The rest of each tier card is filler around it.
And here is the second admission. I did not know if it would work when I first wrote "use the free one" as advice, because the old advice was always to pay.
It holds while one person posts. Add a second drafter and the missing state is the whole problem.
Tab 5: One table with the fetch date
Every row below is from the named page on 25 September 2026. Prices are the yearly-billed figures the pages show by default; monthly figures sit behind a toggle I did not read, so they are not here.
| Tool and tier | Listed price | Unit | Approval queue | Source page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Business Suite | Free | Facebook Page and Instagram account | No | Meta help, How Meta Business Suite works |
| Buffer Free | Free | Up to 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts each | No | buffer.com/pricing |
| Buffer Essentials | $5 a month, billed yearly | Per channel | No | buffer.com/pricing |
| Buffer Team | $10 a month, billed yearly | Per channel | Yes | buffer.com/pricing |
| Later Starter | $18.75 a month, billed yearly | 1 social set, 1 user | No | later.com/pricing |
| Later Growth | $37.50 a month, billed yearly | 2 social sets, 2 users | Yes | later.com/pricing |
| Later Scale | $82.50 a month, billed yearly | See page | Yes | later.com/pricing |
Read the Approval column first and the price column second. That is the order the decision goes in.
Tab 6: What I would tell an owner on a call
If you post alone, use Meta Business Suite and keep the money.
If one other person drafts for you, the cheapest tier that gates posts is Buffer Team at $10 a month per channel billed yearly, so two channels is $20, per Buffer's pricing page on 25 September 2026.
That is the price of not finding out about a bad caption from a customer.
If you have an agency, ask which tool they schedule in and whether you sit on the approving side of it.
Our Manage tier at VALORAE Media is quoted on the call, so ask about the approval step on that same call.
Then set the rule that silence past a deadline means approved, because a queue nobody clears is worse than no queue.
The short version
- Fetch the pricing page yourself and write the date next to every number.
- Use Meta Business Suite when one person posts; it is free and it schedules.
- Add a paid scheduler only when a second person drafts.
- Buy the tier with the approval queue, Buffer Team or Later Growth, never the tier below.
- Compare per channel against per social set before you compare prices.
- Put a deadline on the queue so it never becomes the bottleneck.

Frequently asked questions
Is Meta Business Suite free to schedule Instagram and Facebook posts?
Yes. Meta's How Meta Business Suite works help page, fetched 25 September 2026, calls it a free platform and lists scheduling, publishing and managing posts, stories and reels with a calendar view. There is no paid tier above it.
What does Buffer cost per channel?
Buffer's pricing page, fetched 25 September 2026, shows a Free plan for up to 3 channels, Essentials at $5 a month per channel billed yearly and Team at $10 a month per channel billed yearly. Monthly billing sits behind a toggle on the page and costs more.
Which Buffer or Later tier has an approval workflow?
Buffer's comparison table, fetched 25 September 2026, includes approval workflows only on Team. Later's comparison table, fetched the same day, lists Content Approval Workflow as No on Starter and Yes on Growth and Scale. On both tools the cheapest paid tier does not gate posts.
When should a business pay for a scheduler instead of using Meta Business Suite?
When a second person drafts. Meta Business Suite lets anyone with content permission publish and has no waiting for approval state, so once an editor or agency is posting for you, the fee buys the queue that stops a bad caption going live. If you post alone, keep the money.
