How many hashtags on Instagram Reels: the limit is five, and what they still do for a business page
Instagram's Help Center says you can use up to five tags on a post, and a comment with more than five will not post. What the limit covers, whether comment hashtags count, what hashtags still do for reach, and how a managed business page should pick its five.
Short answer
Five. Instagram's Help Center says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, in the caption or comments, and a comment with more than 5 won't post. Hashtags label a reel and list it on hashtag pages; they are not a reach lever.
On 18 December 2025, Social Media Today reported that Instagram would cap hashtags at five per post.
I read the article again on 12 October 2026, along with Instagram's own Help Center page on hashtags.
The Help Center line is short: "You can use up to 5 tags on a post."
That answers the search. Google autocomplete, read the same day, offers "how many hashtags are allowed on instagram reels", "instagram hashtag limit in comments" and "how to get more views on reels hashtags".
Here is the complication. Plenty of business pages still paste a saved block of tags, far past five, under every reel, and some of those posts now fail in a way the owner never sees.
So this post covers the limit, where it applies, what hashtags still do, and how we would pick five for a page VALORAE Media manages.
Step 1: Know the number and where it lives
The Help Center article is called Use hashtags on Instagram, and I read it on 12 October 2026.
It says you can add hashtags in the caption or comments of your post. It says you can use up to five tags on a post.
Reels get no extra room. Instagram's announcement, as quoted by Social Media Today, says it "will gradually update the number of hashtags that you can include in a caption for a reel or post to five".
Note the word gradually. Instagram rolled it out account by account.
The same SMT piece, by Andrew Hutchinson, says Instagram had tested a lower cap for about a year before, with many users limited to three hashtags in the latest experiment.
So if your page saw three at some point, that was the test. Five is the rule Instagram settled on.
Step 2: Understand what happens in the comments
This is the part people search for most, and the part with the least written about it.
The Help Center says you can put hashtags in a comment. It also says that if you include more than five tags on a single photo or video, your comment won't post.
That is the whole official text on comments.
It tells you a comment carrying more than five tags gets blocked. It does not spell out how tags in the caption and tags in the comments are added together. I looked and found no Instagram page that does.
So I treat five as the total for the post, caption and comments combined. That is the reading that cannot break.
The old trick of five tags in the caption and a pile more in the first comment is dead. At best the comment fails to post. At worst a scheduling tool fails quietly and nobody checks.
And that is the failure I mentioned at the top. The owner sees the reel go live and assumes the hashtag comment went with it.
Step 3: Know what hashtags still do
The Help Center gives hashtags one plain job.
If you have a public account and add hashtags to a post, the post will be visible on the corresponding hashtag page. Tap the tag and you see everything people uploaded with it.
That is a listing, not a promotion.
Now compare it with how Instagram says Reels are ranked. Adam Mosseri's post Instagram Ranking Explained, dated 31 May 2023 and read on 12 October 2026, lists the most important Reels signals in rough order.
They are your activity, your history of interacting with the person who posted, information about the reel, and information about the person who posted.
Information about the reel is described as the audio track, the visuals and popularity. Hashtags are not named anywhere in the Reels section.
The predictions it weighs most are whether someone will reshare the reel, watch it all the way through, like it, and go to the audio page.
None of those is a tag.
SMT's roundup quotes Mosseri saying in May 2025 that hashtags do not improve visibility, but are "a great way to let people know what a post is about".
That is the honest job description. Labelling, not reach.
Step 4: Stop using hashtags to chase views
Hashtags will not rescue a reel.
I know that is the opposite of what a lot of hashtag tools sell. But nothing Instagram has published supports tags as a views lever, and its own announcement frames the cap around relevance and less misuse.
What the ranking post does name is completion, reshares and likes.
So the hour you would spend hunting tags is better spent on the first two seconds of the reel. That is where VALORAE Media puts the effort on the pages we run: the hook, the cut, the cover, then tags last.
There is a line in the ranking post worth more than any tag. Instagram says it aims to make certain reels less visible, including low-resolution or watermarked reels, reels that are majority text, and reels already posted on Instagram.
Fix those before you think about hashtags at all.
Step 5: Pick five that describe the reel
Instagram's own guidance, quoted by SMT, says fewer, more targeted hashtags rather than many generic ones can improve both performance and people's experience.
So here is how we would pick the five for a business page.
One tag for what the business is. A bakery, a dental clinic, a gym.
One or two for what this specific reel shows. The product, the procedure, the class.
One for the series, if the page runs one. A branded tag you reuse on every episode, so the hashtag page becomes an archive of your own work.
One spare, or none. Leaving a slot empty costs nothing.
Skip the giant generic tags. A tag with millions of posts lists your reel among millions of others, and it tells nobody what your post is about.
Two rules from the Help Center will save you a failed post. Numbers are allowed in hashtags, but spaces and special characters such as $ won't work. And you can only tag your own posts.
Step 6: Check the account as well as the caption
The Help Center adds one more line that matters to small businesses.
When people with private profiles tag posts, they won't appear publicly on hashtag pages.
So a private business account gets nothing from hashtags. Public first.
The ranking post adds the other check. If an account repeatedly posts content against the Recommendation Guidelines, none of its posts will be eligible for recommendation for a period of time, and Account Status is where you see it.
I covered that screen in our post on Instagram trial reels for business pages, because a missing Trial toggle is often the first sign of the same limit.
I am not sure the cap stays at five. Instagram tested three for a year before settling, and it could move again without a blog post.
But a reel that is good with zero tags will be good with five. The reverse has never been true.
VALORAE Arc made the same call for founders' clips in its Instagram Reels checklist for podcast clips, checked against Instagram's own guide: the clip does the work, the caption labels it.
The short version
- Use five hashtags or fewer on every reel and post.
- Count caption and comment tags together as one budget of five.
- Delete the saved block of generic tags.
- Pick tags that say what the reel is, plus one series tag.
- Make the account public, then check Account Status.
- Spend the time on the hook, not the tags.
This is how we handle captions on the pages we run at valoraemedia.com.
Frequently asked questions
How many hashtags are allowed on Instagram Reels?
Five. Instagram's Help Center article Use hashtags on Instagram, read on 12 October 2026, says you can use up to 5 tags on a post. Reels get no separate allowance; Instagram's own announcement, quoted by Social Media Today, covers a caption for a reel or post.
Do hashtags in the comments count toward the Instagram hashtag limit?
The Help Center says you can add hashtags in the caption or comments, and that if you include more than 5 tags on a single photo or video, your comment won't post. It does not spell out how caption and comment tags are added together, so treat five as the total for the post.
How many hashtags should I use on Instagram?
Up to five, and fewer is fine. Instagram's own wording, quoted by Social Media Today on 18 December 2025, says fewer, more targeted hashtags rather than many generic ones can improve both performance and people's experience.
Do hashtags get more views on Reels?
Not in any way Instagram documents. Its Instagram Ranking Explained post lists the most important Reels signals as your activity, your history with the poster, information about the reel and information about the poster. Hashtags are not named. They mainly label a reel and list it on hashtag pages.
Do hashtags work on a private Instagram account?
No public reach. The Help Center says posts tagged by people with private profiles won't appear publicly on hashtag pages.
