You can boost an Instagram Live now. Read the fee line before you tap Boost.
Instagram now lets accounts boost a live video as an ad, shown in Feed, Stories and Reels while the broadcast runs. Instagram's own help page says to schedule it two hours ahead, and warns that funds added in the iPhone app can carry an Apple fee. When a business Live is worth boosting, and who should press the button.
Short answer
Yes. Instagram's help page says you can boost a live video before you go live or schedule it, and the ad runs in Feed, Stories and Reels only while you stream. Schedule it at least two hours early, and add ad funds outside the iPhone app to avoid an Apple service fee.
On 30 September 2026, Social Media Today reported that Instagram had added a way to boost live videos, the same way you boost a post, a Story or a Reel.
I went to Instagram's own help page to check the details.
The most useful line on it has nothing to do with reach. It is about which phone you pay from.
So this post covers what the feature does, the fee line, when a business Live is worth paying for, and who should press the button when an agency runs the account.
1. What Instagram shipped
Instagram's help page on boosting a live video, read on 3 October 2026, sets it out plainly.
Your live video becomes the ad creative. The ad can show in Feed, in Stories and in Reels.
You can boost right before you go live, or schedule the boost in advance.
And then the line that changes how you plan it: the ad only runs while you are streaming.
The steps on the help page are short. Open Live, tap Boost, pick an audience or take the suggested one, set a budget plus a start and end time, review, and tap Boost live video. The ad goes to review, and you get a notification when it is ready.
Social Media Today also notes that ads for an upcoming Live could already be built through Meta's Ads Manager. The new part is doing it from the app, for the broadcast itself.
2. The fee line
Here is the complication.
Before the steps, the help page says that in most regions an Apple service fee of 30% of your total ad payment, before taxes and local fees, may apply when you add funds to your ad account in the Instagram iOS app.
The page says Apple keeps that fee, not Instagram or Meta.
Read that again with a business budget in mind. Top up the ad account from an iPhone and part of the spend may never reach an ad.
Instagram links a separate page on how to avoid the fee. The practical version is simple: add funds from somewhere that is not the iPhone app, then boost from wherever you like.
Most business owners boost from their phone, in the minute before they go live. That is exactly the moment this fee gets paid by accident.
3. The two-hour rule
The help page recommends scheduling the boost at least two hours before you go live, to reduce ad delivery delays.
The reason is the review step. A boost is an ad, and ads get checked before they run.
So a Live you decide to boost five minutes before the start may spend its first stretch unboosted. Since the ad only runs during the broadcast, every minute spent in review is a minute of the paid window gone.
The page does not say what happens to the budget if you start late or end early. If timing is tight, check the ad's results after the broadcast before assuming the full budget was used as planned.
4. Most Lives should not be boosted
That is the contrarian part, so here is the defence.
A boost puts your broadcast in front of people who do not follow you, in the middle of whatever you are saying. They arrive with no context and a thumb already moving.
That works when the Live has a reason to be watched in real time:
- A launch, where something opens or goes on sale during the broadcast.
- A live question session, where a stranger can ask something and get an answer in a minute.
- An event, a demo or a reveal that will not mean the same thing tomorrow.
It does not work for a routine chat that would land just as well as a Reel. For that, post the Reel, and spend the money on boosting the Reel instead, where the creative does not change halfway through.
Plan a Live the way you would plan any post: what is the one reason someone should stop for this? If the honest answer is "it is live", that is not a reason a stranger cares about.
5. Who presses the button when an agency runs the page
The boost spends money from an ad account, so the account question comes first.
VALORAE Media's standing advice is that ad spend sits on the business's own ad account, paid from the business's own payment method, and the agency gets access through Meta's business tools. We wrote up why in Never give your agency your password.
For a boosted Live that gives you three things:
- The receipts are yours. Every boost shows up in your own billing history.
- The fee decision is yours. You choose where funds get added, so nobody tops up from an iPhone by habit.
- The history stays. If you change agencies, the ad results go nowhere.
Then split the jobs. Whoever is on camera should not be the person scheduling the boost two hours earlier. On a managed page, the agency schedules it, and the business approves the budget the day before.
6. What to do before your next Live
- Decide whether this Live has a real-time reason to watch. If not, do not boost it.
- Add funds to the ad account from a computer or another route that is not the iPhone app.
- Schedule the boost at least two hours before the start time.
- Set the end time a little past your planned finish, since the ad stops when you stop.
- Go live on time. The paid window starts at your scheduled start.
- After the broadcast, read the ad's results and compare them with a Reel you boosted for similar money.
Step 6 is the one people skip. One boosted Live tells you very little. Three, compared against Reels, tell you whether Live is worth paying for on your account at all.
If you are deciding how much of this to run yourself, Siddharth's note on where agency margin comes from explains what you pay an agency for when it does the scheduling.
The short version
- Instagram now lets you boost a live video. The broadcast is the ad, shown in Feed, Stories and Reels.
- The ad only runs while you are live.
- Schedule the boost at least two hours ahead, because it goes through review.
- Instagram's help page warns of an Apple service fee of 30% of the ad payment in most regions when funds are added in the iOS app. Add funds elsewhere.
- Boost Lives with a real-time reason to watch. Post everything else as a Reel.
- Keep ad spend on the business's own account, with the agency given access, never a password.
- Compare boosted Lives against boosted Reels before deciding Live is worth the money.

Frequently asked questions
Can you boost an Instagram Live?
Yes. Instagram's help page, read on 3 October 2026, says you can boost a live video right before going live or schedule the boost in advance. The live video becomes the ad creative and can show in Feed, Stories and Reels. Social Media Today reported the option on 30 September 2026.
When does a boosted Instagram Live ad run?
Only while you are live. Instagram's help page says the ad runs automatically when you go live at your scheduled start time, and it recommends scheduling the boost at least two hours ahead to reduce ad delivery delays, since the ad goes through review first.
Is there an extra fee for boosting on an iPhone?
There can be. Instagram's help page says that in most regions an Apple service fee of 30% of your total ad payment, before taxes and local fees, may apply when you add funds to your ad account in the Instagram iOS app. Instagram links a separate page on how to avoid it.
Should a business boost every Instagram Live?
No. A boost drops strangers into the middle of a broadcast. It earns its spend on a Live with a reason to watch in real time, such as a launch, a live answer session or an event, and it wastes money on a routine chat that would work just as well as a Reel.
Who should pay for a boosted Live when an agency runs the page?
The business, from its own ad account, with the agency given access through Meta's business tools rather than a shared password. That keeps the spend, the receipts and the ad history with the business if the agency changes.
